Happiness Is an Intentional Practice, Not an Accident

I want to share something that feels especially important right now: I am happy. Truly, deeply, unapologetically happy and honestly amazed about it, even—in the midst of everything that’s happening in the world. I hope that is not triggering for anyone and I’m aware that not everyone feels this way, and I don’t take my joy for granted. But here’s the truth: my happiness is not luck. It is the result of intentional choices, daily habits, and deep inner work.
I didn’t just stumble into a happy life. I built it. And I’m sharing because if I can do it, so can you.

Facing the Shadows First
Years ago, when I realized that this reality was crumbling (and yes, there are those of us who knew) no amount of flowers, candles, or crystals could create lasting happiness if I was still carrying around the weight of my unexamined shadows. I knew if I was going to be truly happy in this new world I needed to go deep, so I made a commitment to myself: to turn toward the uncomfortable, to heal the patterns that were holding me back, and to be radically honest with myself.
Shadow work isn’t glamorous, t’s raw, sometimes exhausting, and deeply personal. But it’s also liberating. By confronting my fears, insecurities, and old wounds, I made space for real joy to take root and then grow. Without that groundwork, my rituals and self-care would have been like building on sand. What I did was started to build a foundation. One ritual at a time. Over and over again.

Building My Ritual Architecture
Once the foundation was clear, I started building the architecture of my daily life around what nourished me:
Morning coffee with medicinal mushrooms to ground my body and focus my mind.

Crystals that anchor me in intention and serve as visual reminders of what I’m calling in.

Candle rituals for manifestation, clarity, and protection.

Self-care gestures like buying myself flowers every week, not because I need a reason, but because beauty belongs in everyday life.

Weekly community check-ins to stay connected to the people who inspire and support me.

Exercise and nourishing food to keep my physical body strong.

Regular reflection and journaling to keep my mental and spiritual life in alignment.

These aren’t just random acts. They are pillars that hold up my happiness, especially when the world outside feels chaotic and uncertain.

Living Well in a Chaotic World
We’re living in a time when it’s easy to get swept up in fear, outrage, and despair. And I’m not immune to feeling those things. The difference is, I have created a life that gives me multiple pathways back to joy.
When I feel heavy, I know exactly which practices will shift my energy. I know that lighting a candle isn’t just “a nice thing to do”, it’s a reset for my mind and spirit. I know that taking a walk, cooking a healthy meal, or talking to a friend are not distractions, they’re the very tools that keep me whole.
This is what I want people to understand: happiness in today’s world doesn’t happen by accident. It’s built. It’s maintained. It’s tended like a garden.

The Myth of Waiting
Too many people believe they have to wait for external conditions to improve before they can feel good. They wait for the news to get better. They wait for the job, the partner, the perfect body, the political climate to align with their ideals.
But waiting is the enemy of happiness.
We don’t have to wait for the world to change before we choose joy. In fact, our joy is part of what changes the world. Every time we show up with more light, more groundedness, more compassion, we become the living proof that peace is possible in real time.

My Invitation to You
If you take anything from my story, let it be this: create your happy life on purpose. Choose the habits, rituals, and relationships that keep you aligned, even when the outside world feels unstable. Work through your shadows, because unresolved pain will always leak into your present. Build a lifestyle that supports your joy from multiple angles, physical, mental, emotional, spiritual.
And most importantly, make happiness non-negotiable.
Because no matter what’s happening in the headlines, your life is your sacred space. You get to decide how it feels to live inside it. If you want to explore, dig deeper or just chat about how to get from where you are to where you want to be, reach out. I would love to share.

In light, love and the pursuit of happiness, Donna
