Somewhere along the way, the word ritual got a bad reputation. For a lot of people, it brings up images of something dark, secretive, or taboo. Maybe it feels too religious, or too “woo.” Maybe it got lumped in with superstition, or written off as unnecessary in our busy, modern lives. None of which is true.
Rituals at their core aren’t scary at all. In fact, they are one of the most natural and life-giving things we can do, and in my opinion should do.
Ritual is simply the act of doing something with intention, consistently. It’s marking time. It’s giving meaning to your actions. It’s creating a rhythm in your life that grounds you, energizes you, and connects you to something bigger than the chaos of the everyday. Personally speaking my life shifted in a MAJOR way when I started looking at the things I do everyday and created rituals around them by being INTENTIONAL.
So how did we lose that?
For centuries, rituals were woven into daily life: sunrise prayers, seasonal festivals, community gatherings, meal blessings. They gave us a sense of connection, to nature, to each other, to our inner selves. But as culture shifted, ritual got dismissed. In a world chasing productivity, ritual was seen as unnecessary, frivolous, or even suspicious. We started calling them “habits” or “routines” instead, stripping the magic and intention right out of them. And here’s the funny thing: we already live by rituals every day, we just don’t call them that.
Think about it:
Morning coffee before you do anything else.
Scrolling your phone before bed.
That Friday night glass of wine that signals the week is done.
These are rituals.
They’re just not always the ones we consciously choose and they are not always good for you. That’s why we need intention.
The truth is, ritual is powerful. It shapes us. It builds momentum in our lives. And when we reclaim ritual intentionally, it becomes the doorway to transformation.
Rituals as Good Habits in Disguise
Let’s be real: bad habits are just rituals with no awareness behind them. Drinking that glass of wine because of stress? Ritual. Doom-scrolling until 2am? Ritual. People repeat these things because they soothe, distract, or comfort in the moment. But without intention, bad rituals will pull you further from the life you actually want.
Now imagine flipping that energy. Imagine taking the power of ritual and using it to fuel your goals, your healing, your joy. That’s where the magic is.
A Few Examples of Good Rituals
The Morning Reset – Light a candle, breathe deeply, and write down three things you want to call in for the day. Even five minutes can set your whole tone.
Movement as Ritual – Put on your favorite playlist and stretch, dance, or walk. Don’t think of it as “exercise”—think of it as honoring your body’s energy.
The Gratitude Close-Out – Before bed, name one thing you’re grateful for and one thing you’re releasing. It’s like a nightly mental detox.
Seasonal Rituals – Making moon water under the full moon, cooking with seasonal herbs, or simply opening the windows on the first warm spring day. These little acts root you into the cycles of life.
Rituals don’t have to be complicated, mystical, or expensive. They’re just intentional acts that connect you back to yourself.
Why We Need Ritual Now
In a world that constantly pulls our attention in a million directions, ritual is an anchor. It says: I choose this moment. I choose this action. I choose to give meaning to my life, on purpose. Ritual isn’t about restriction, it’s about freedom. It frees you from the unconscious habits that drain you and gives you the tools to create the life you actually want.
So maybe it’s time we reclaim the word. Maybe it’s time we stop thinking of ritual as taboo, and start thinking of it as the sacred art of showing up for ourselves.
Because the truth is, we’re all already living by rituals. The real question is: are yours supporting the life you want or holding you back?
Think of one ritual you already have that doesn’t serve you, and one small ritual you could add this week that would. Choose with intention and then watch what shifts.
I share weekly rituals on my website http://www.donnamennedesigns.com. The one up right now is about Self Love. Seems like a great way to start. Xoxo ❤️Donna
