Time, Social Media, and the Power of Real Community

This past weekend, I went to San Diego for my 45th high school reunion. I spent time with friends and family and completely stepped away from social media. It was so FUN and it was wonderful. No endless scrolling, no breaking news alerts, no sudden flood of opinions. Just me, family, friends, and a slower rhythm of time.
And I have to tell you, it felt incredible. My nervous system actually exhaled. Without being bombarded by constant noise, I could feel myself drop into the present moment: enjoying laughter at the table, lingering over conversations, and noticing the details of life that I often rush past.
That’s when it really hit me, social media has warped our sense of time. Everything feels urgent, instantaneous, and fleeting. Posts vanish in hours, algorithms speed up our thoughts, and before we know it, we’re trapped in a loop that makes real life feel like it’s running in the background instead of the main event.
But the truth is, time stretches differently when you step away. Minutes feel fuller. Days expand. And the connections we make face-to-face, or in slower, intentional spaces, are the ones that nourish us for years to come.

Why Community Beyond Social Media Matters
There was a time when I was the social media queen. I was sharing my entire life online. When I moved to Los Angeles slowly it shifted, because I was so busy living my life in person that I simply didn’t have time. As a business owner I understand it’s a necessary tool and don’t get me wrong, I love what social media has made possible, we’ve all met people, learned things, and shared ideas we might not have encountered otherwise. But these platforms aren’t built for depth. They’re built for speed, for constant engagement, and often, for control.
TikTok, Instagram, Twitter, none of these apps are guaranteed to last forever. They change rules, censor voices, or even disappear altogether. And if we build our entire sense of community inside them, then when the app goes, the community goes too.
That’s why it’s so important to create spaces outside of the algorithm. Spaces where our conversations aren’t dictated by “what’s trending.” Places where we can show up as whole humans, not just content creators or scrolling spectators.
For me, that means guiding people toward my website and my Patreon. Not just as “platforms,” but as gathering grounds, digital living rooms if you will, where connection, depth, and sovereignty matter more than clicks.

Reclaiming Time, Reclaiming Self
If you’ve felt the same exhaustion, that sense of your attention being hijacked, here’s the reminder: you’re not powerless. You can reclaim time. You can pause. You can create boundaries with your phone, your apps, your feeds.
And in that space, you’ll remember what matters: the people you love, the work you’re called to do, the rituals that ground you, and the communities that sustain you.
Because one day social media as we know it will go away. It’s already happening. Censorship has killed real connection as the world fights to hang onto basic democracy. The algorithm won’t always be king, it will be monitored, shifted and most likely you’ll only see what they want you to see. But your real-life connections, your self-awareness, and the intentional communities you choose to nurture? Those are timeless, those are real and those are the ones that matter. Put down the phone and lean into them.

✨ I’d love to know—what do you notice when you take a break from social media? How does time feel different to you? Let’s connect.

In light, love and slowing down….

xoxo Donna
